He walked into my studio holding a yellow school bus-shaped pencil bag. When I asked him what was inside of it his adult answered somewhat condescendingly, “what doesn’t he have in there”? I asked him if I could see, and the boy, who I imagined to be about six years old, eagerly proceeded to fumble with the zipper and opened the pencil bag to reveal a myriad of special trinkets he had collected. When I asked him which was the best one he immediately dug to the bottom & pulled out an owl shaped watch, the wings of which opened to reveal the face. I showed him my drawer of special collage materials which he appreciated with excitement, and yet a restraint beyond his years.
